Lamar Dodd School of Art

Problem:

Department had a very large collection of 35mm slides of artwork from around the world. Digitization and categorization into a database was a high priority. As well, professors were collecting extensive image collections during research trips.  There was no central storage for housing these images, nor was there a user-friendly interface to access the digital files, thus causing many of them to become lost or inaccessible.

Solution:

CIIDS provided an ongoing archival system, automatically reading and categorizing the digital assets into a database and making them available to faculty via a Web interface. The system was integrated with the University’s WebCT program, allowing professors to easily find and transfer related images to the course curriculum site used by students. Today, the system boasts over 50,000 images and grows by an average of 8,000 images per year.
